How much does a website cost?

How much does a website cost?

One of the most common things we get asked is How much does a website cost? It’s one of those questions that clients love asking and designers hate answering.

How much does a website cost?

As a client you need to know how much it will cost you to get a website made, but simply asking ‘how much does a website cost’ is like asking an architect how much a house would cost before they know the type and size of house you’re after!
It is a bungalow, detached, semi-detached, a terrace, a flat? Does it require multiple bathrooms, bedrooms, a garage? All of this (and more) would be required before the architect could give you any sort of quote and the same can be applied to getting a quote for a website.

It all depends on the specifics, so providing a straight answer isn’t easy.

To make it a little easier, we can break down the cost of a website into two seperate categories. The first is the minor costs for the web hosting (space on a server where your website can be stored) and registration of the domain name (the address of your website).

The second is what you pay someone to actually design and build (code) the site for you.

Domain names cost roughly around £10 – £20 per year and you can expect to pay between £5 to £25 per month for a small hosting package.

The second part is a little trickier to answer as there is a lot of questions to answer before anyone could give you any sort of accurate quote.

Questions such as:

  1. What are your aims/goals for this website? (e.g. to generate sales, inform your customers, gather data, etc)?
  2. How many pages does/will the site have?
  3. Does the site need a contact form (and does it link through to an email address or database)?
  4. Does the site require e-commerce (online buying and/or selling) elements?
  5. How much copy is there for the site? Alternatively do you need an extra quotation for a website copywriter to help you with the copy?
  6. Will all images to be used on the website be provided?

These are just a few of the questions that will need to be answered before you can get a quote, and you might not have (or know) all the answers to them, and that’s fine!

At SketchCode Studio we have a website briefing sheet that we ask all clients to fill in as best they can. Once this has been done we arrange a free consultation where we can discuss your website requirements in more depth and help you to answer any questions you’re not sure about.

Only then are we able to give you an accurate quote for how much your website is likely to cost.
